Social Media Strategy

Many of our clients come to us with the same challenge – creating a robust social media profile feels impossible to keep up with!

New platforms pop up overnight and there are endless hashtags and trends. Your business can spend hours trying to craft the perfect content, with no certainty that any of your time and effort will actually help grow your customer base.

The Marketing Handyman believes that with the right planning and scheduling tools in place, social media can be one of your greatest brand assets.

We can help you navigate the various platforms available, and craft content that reflects your brand or mission. Done right, social media becomes a conversation with your ideal customer base, driving business to your door.

"Social marketing eliminates the middlemen, providing brands the unique opportunity to have a direct relationship with their customers."

Let's Talk Social Media Pros and Cons

Quick Tip

If you’re just starting your business, choose one or two social media platforms and build unique content for each of them.

Do you have amazing visuals to share? Instagram is a great choice!

Trying to make business-to-business connections? LinkedIn is where you should spend your time?

Do you have a wealth of resources to share with the public including videos, articles, blog posts, and some funny memes? Facebook is still a great option!

Benefits of Social Media Marketing

  • It’s free! – Most social media platforms are free to join and won’t charge you for maintaining a presence. Many will ask if you want to advertise or “boost your post” for a small amount, but growing your fan base and posting an inside look at your operation are totally free.

  • An open line of communication – We live in the digital age where conversations and decisions are made without interacting with someone face-to-face. While that comes with its own set of challenges, social media provides a great opportunity to connect and converse with your audience directly. You’ll have the ability to ask and answer questions, survey your audience, and share your thoughts on the industry.

  • Build a loyal fan (and customer) base – People like supporting businesses that they have a personal connection with. Social media is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to achieve this. Giving your customers a shout-out, showing them what goes on behind the scenes, and sharing your personal wins all strive to create a personal affiliation between you as the business owner and the people you serve.

  • Sharability – This is why we want to give social media a try. We want to go viral! While it seems like the planets need to align for that to happen, the amazing ease of sharing stories, articles, and photos on social media makes it a great tool to reach an audience you couldn’t have previously. Social media gives you access to an extended network of potential customers, with the built-in credibility of whoever has shared your brand.

Drawbacks of Social Media Marketing

  • It can be time-consuming – This is the biggest downfall of social media and whether you are a business, nonprofit, aspiring entrepreneur, or just an average everyday user, social media can eat up a lot of your time. It is far too easy to get lost in news feeds and photos of delicious food and cute puppies. It’s also close to impossible to keep up with all of the trends in the various platforms. There are whole industries of influencers and social media experts that just do social media all day – you have a business to run!
  • Risk of negative publicity – Building a social media presence opens you up to a bit of risk. There is a whole world of people that can find your brand and while most platforms have a way of filtering out malicious content, there is a possibility that it can end up on your profile. At a certain point, your presence on social media is not fully in your control (isn’t this why we started our own business in the first place!). While the risks are there, the rewards can be very worthwhile, however.
  • Personal and professional lives can get blurred – To grow your social media presence, you have to give a little bit of yourself. After all, it is a person that posts on the various platforms. This can often lead to the line between your personal life and professional business becoming quite blurry. Work-life balance is very important and it can be far too easy to check messages, likes, and performance on social media, even when you are decompressing from your day.

False wins – Social media can be a fantastic investment, but ultimately, we are trying to grow our business, serve more of our community, and get more leads. While getting a dozen likes or shares on a Facebook post can feel great, if it never leads to someone wanting to utilize your business services, what is the point? Likes, fans, and comments are all great to have, as long as you recognize what they mean to the bottom line.

Quick Tip

One of the best ways to prevent social media becoming a time suck? Dedicate specific time to drafting posts and calendar them out to post automatically!

Want to post across several platforms every day? Plan to sit down one day each week and draft all the content and then schedule ALL of your posts to upload for the week.

Want to post less frequently? You can still plan for that – sit down once to figure out your themes and content for that month’s post. Then set it and forget it!

Developing a social media content calendar will save you time and help generate creative ideas!
